At Upskilla, we’re on a mission to launch careers in data and tech, and few sectors are more vital or more ready for new talent than data centers.
Data centers are the unseen force behind everything from streaming your favourite shows to supporting life changing innovations in healthcare and finance. As the world becomes more connected, demand for this digital infrastructure is booming. But there’s a problem: the people needed to build and maintain data centers are in short supply.
A sector at a turning point
According to the Uptime Institute, around 25% of data center professionals in the US and Europe are over 55. In just ten years, a quarter of the workforce will retire, and that’s before we consider an inevitable surge in demand.
Even more concerning: only 18% of the current workforce is under 30. The challenge isn’t just a skills gap; it’s a looming labour shortage. If nothing changes, the industry risks holding back innovation simply because there aren’t enough people to power it.
That’s where the opportunity lies and you come in.
Opening doors to the next gen
If the industry wants to build the digital economy of the future, it needs to start by making data center careers more visible, desirable and accessible, especially to younger generations, career changers and underrepresented groups.
Most people use digital tools daily without realising the critical infrastructure that makes it all work. Data centers are often overlooked, but they’re essential. It’s time to change that by telling a new story about this exciting industry.
At Upskilla, we believe data and tech careers shouldn’t feel out of reach. That’s why we want to help promote clear, practical pathways for anyone interested in stepping into this space, whether you’re exploring your first job, reskilling or transitioning from a different industry.
Are you unhappy in your current profession? Are you lacking formal qualifications but have the drive to transform your future?
Shaping futures
Awareness can’t wait until university; having a degree isn’t even an essential prerequisite for a data center career. Tech giants are looking for attitude over experience, and outlook over certifications.
Many entry-level positions in the industry focus on training and learning while you work, so you can change your career while you earn. STACK Infrastructure is a great example of an organisation that’s primed for this change, and is actively hiring from outside of the industry.
Check out STACK's recently launched Academy and its EMEA training program hiring for 55 new data center roles in 2025.
Aligning with purpose
Today’s job seekers, especially Gen Z and Millennials, want more than a salary. They’re looking for purpose, impact and alignment with their values. The good news? The data center industry has a powerful story to tell.
This sector is driving greener infrastructure, improving access to digital services and opening doors for people from all walks of life. Initiatives like trainee schemes for underrepresented groups, internships and inclusive hiring practices are proving that tech can be a force for good.
At Upskilla, we spotlight employers and pathways that reflect those values, because launching a career should feel like building a future you believe in.
Be the change
Industries around the world are rethinking how they attract and grow talent. It’s time the data center sector does the same. Together, we can make this field more inclusive, visible and accessible, not just for the industry’s sake, but for the benefit of everyone who depends on it.
We’re proud to be part of that movement. We’re here to help people discover data and tech careers that are forward-thinking, futureproof and full of purpose.
This isn’t just about filling roles, it’s about launching careers, transforming lives and building the digital world of tomorrow.
